POON Productions – eclectic dance driven musicals

June 23rd, 2009 admin 1 comment
At POON Productions we create eclectic dance driven musicals with lush exotic music and set them in night clubs, theaters and warehouses all over NYC.
As a universal celebration of human sensuality, our shows seduce the audience into immediate connection with the performance, stimulating all of the senses as it pulls the spectator from the mundane world into one of exalted revery and passion.
The mission of each individual show is to create a unique world where primal rhythm and divine beauty are merged through movement and music, exposing the many different cultures living right next door.  We create a high energy, sensual yet elegant atmosphere in order to inspire, uplift and connect every audience to themselves and to the others.
All shows are conceived and choreographed by Jordana Che Toback and all Music is by Tom Rossi.
POON productions currently offers four sexy urban dance shows; TERRE, PINK LADY, and BEHIND THE RED DOOR with original music by Tom Rossi. We are also currently working on DREAMLAND FOLLIES, a re-imagining of an authentic 1920’s Floor show with Michael Arenella’s Dreamland Orchestra to be performed Spring ‘09.  All of our shows have an element of audience participation, and all shows are staged within and throughout the performance venue.
Each site specific performance spectacle is comprised of an amalgamation of dance and musical styles from around the world. Each style is chosen because of it’s inherent power to entice, mystify, dazzle and inspire. Alternately tapping into the raw energy of a rock band, the dazzle of Dancing With The Stars, the rowdy exaltation of a Can Can, and the coyness of a strip club seduction, POON’s supremely theatrical approach has something for everyone.  Utilizing a provocative brew of elaborate, multi-dimensional costume design, erotic imagery and subversive choreography, the shows are bound together by a drum driven, live world orchestra, which elegantly fuses contemporary Electronica and Rock with the ancient and earthy sounds of Africa, Cuba, India, the Middle East and beyond, depending on the show.
POON MOVEMENT choreographed by Jordana Che Toback, includes the funky street vocabulary of hip-hop, the sexy simplicity of Fosse’s jazz, the complex rhythm of classical Indian dance, the sensuality of belly dance, and the ferocity of martial arts as seen in the Peking Opera’s movement training all framed within the tight, kaleidoscopic structure of a Busby Berkely musical number. The result is a beautiful, bawdy energy that has never existed before. This amalgamation of energy, technique and culture creates a groundbreaking style of dance primal, visceral, sexy, yet also universal. POON Productions entertain, seduce and conquer by seamlessly moving between the worlds of art and popular culture, stimulating all the senses as she goes.
The MUSIC by Tom Rossi is a vibrant mosaic of contemporary Electronica and Rock fused with the earthy, drum-driven tones of Africa, Cuba, India and the Middle East. The result is a funky hybrid of post-modern technological expression with traditional organic instrumentation that adds a powerful dimension to the already unique synthesis of the dance.   The live show has ensemble variations from a quartet with DJ, ethnic percussion and cello, to full 8-piece band, adding drums, bass, guitars, African harp and vocals.
STAGING challenges the traditional expectations of the audience by surrounding, enveloping, and closely engaging those who are present. A site-specific installation, there is no proscenium or artificial barriers to separate the show from the attendees; hence, the viewer will experience POON shows purely, without prejudice or agenda. The result is overwhelming.
COSTUMES for POON Productions will be contributed by some of the most unique and visionary fashion designers we can find. While we have only just begin, we have already worked with Zaldy (L.A.M.B), Peter Soronen and Elisa Jimenez (Season 4 Project Runway) all of whom are known for three-dimensional designs that vary from sublime to outrageous, constantly resurrecting vintage styles yet refashioning them for a modern expression. Strategic hair and make-up complete the look and each number out-dazzles the last with a feeling of elegant unraveling as it proceeds.
